Okay - can someone please explain to me why the GOVERNMENT asked if ELMO was a communist? A socialist? Why Cookie Monster was under fire? Why Big Bird?
In an effort to save some money, they went after Sesame Street. *insert eye roll here* The idiots running our Government think that it's time to start defunding PBS and NPR. The same PBS that we used to watch to learn that mistakes can be turned into birds with Bob Ross, the same PBS that we learned about different types of dinosaurs on Dinosaur Train, the same place were words come alive in Word World, and that if something bad happens and you're scared there are always helpers and that it's okay to ask for help with Mr. Rogers. That's just some of the children's programing. Where will we be able to get cooking lessons from Julia Child? Or learn that all you need to cook fish is some hot sand and lime juice? Do you remember your first orchestra experience? Mine was on PBS.
This is the SAME NPR that I would listen to on long trips from Colorado to Texas learning different bits of trivia, learn about the crop futures, and about aliens all on the same channel. NPR is where I first learned who Jamie Oliver was and about TED Talks. I can't tell you how many things I learned from NPR; too many to list, if I'm honest.
Those two channels, while consumed in two different ways, were important to who I am now. I lived out in the big middle of nowheresville surrounded by dry grass and cows. The nearest museum was at least twenty minutes away and farm schedules and Mom's work schedule didn't always align with allowing visits. Much of the outside world I learned via NPR and PBS.
What needs to happen now is we the viewers and listeners need to make calls to our elected officials. Make some noise on social media. Let's save these entertaining, educational resources.
